A shocking revelation has come to light, highlighting a costly oversight by many Australians. Last year, it is estimated that Australians paid a staggering $1.6 billion in avoidable credit card interest! But here's where it gets controversial... a simple review of their credit card options could have saved them a fortune.
According to a survey by Canstar, a finance comparison site, a third of credit card holders have never even considered switching their card. And this is the part most people miss: by staying loyal to their current provider, they're paying a high price.
Canstar's analysis revealed that Australians collectively paid over $3.4 billion in credit card interest, with an average rate of over 18% on total debt. However, if these indebted individuals had switched to a card with a 10% or lower rate, they could have saved a collective $1.6 billion!
Sally Tindall, Canstar's Data Insights Director, emphasized the cost of "setting and forgetting." She stated, "Credit card loyalty is costing Australians $1.6 billion annually in unnecessary interest."
The latest data from the Reserve Bank of Australia supports this, showing that banks earned almost $1.59 billion in credit card fees for the financial year ending 2024, an 11% increase from the previous year.
Tindall recommends an annual review of credit cards, suggesting, "No matter the card, schedule a health check every 12 months. Check your rate, fees, and calculate the value of your rewards. If the interest and fees outweigh the rewards, it's time to consider a switch."
So, are you ready to take control of your finances and potentially save thousands? It's time to review and compare your options!
