The Thwaites Glacier, located at the edge of West Antarctica, is in a critical state. It's melting rapidly from all sides, including its underside, due to warming oceans. This glacier, larger than the state of Florida, spans approximately 80 miles and is the widest in the world. Its rapid melting could lead to a complete collapse within the next two to three decades, affecting billions of people worldwide. The Seabed Curtain Project argues that it's cheaper to prevent this collapse now rather than deal with the aftermath later.
The project's innovative solution involves a series of massive 'curtains' anchored to the seabed. The top of these curtains would be made of floating materials, aiming to reduce the flow of warm water under the glacier, thereby slowing down its melting. While this idea is still in its early stages, a global team of scientists is working on it, with initial tests planned in the Van Mijenfjorden in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. She concludes, 'It would be absolutely insane to go straight to Thwaites and start building something. We need to test this at a much lower cost, in less harsh conditions.'
