Guseli explains the dramatic final

Damien McCartney

We spoke with Val Guseli just before the medal ceremony. He called that final the “craziest level of halfpipe snowboarding of all time.”

There were numerous crashes, and several riders didn’t post times. Both Guseli and James crashed twice.

“I think when it’s something like this, everyone wants to win and … we all jumped the gun a little bit,” he told Nine’s James Bracey.

“Even Scotty, you know, he didn’t get his first run — he pushed really hard. And then, unfortunately, he didn’t get his last one either.”

Guseli’s final run was spectacular, scoring 88 and securing fifth place.

“You always want to put on a show, especially if you don’t win,” he said to Nine’s James Bracey.

“It was a great night — I landed one of the best runs I’ve ever had, which is always a win in itself, and I think I had the highest air of the night, so I’ll take that. That’s a big achievement.

That’s the philosophy I ride by in snowboarding — go as big as I can. I’m happy I did that tonight.”

Guseli, still only 20, admitted he didn’t feel he had the tricks needed to reach the podium today. That kind of humility is one reason he’s so beloved in Australia.

“I don’t really have more tricks I’m comfortable pulling up there, or at least not tonight,” he said.

“So I basically put all my eggs in the amplitude basket. The first and second runs, the velocity got away from me and I lost it.”

“But whatever … we might see you in slopestyle.”

James fights back tears on the podium

Damien McCartney

Scotty James appeared close to tears as he collected his silver medal from Jess Fox.

“Scotty James, you’re not just a great bloke, you’re an absolute legend,” Mitch Tomlinson said for Nine.

James wasn’t the only one getting emotional — Torah Bright also shed tears in commentary.

“I’m shedding tears with you, Scotty, because you’ve just made history,” she said.

“This isn’t the outcome you wanted, but an Olympic silver around your neck makes us all proud. Three Olympic medals.”

JAMES WINS SILVER!

Damien McCartney

It’s heartbreak for Scotty James. He was building an incredible final run that could have challenged gold, but he crashed on his last trick.

He collapsed into the snow, head in his hands. He’s uninjured but clearly emotional. It’s his second consecutive silver.

“He gave it everything, risking it all for the gold around his neck,” Torah Bright commented for Nine.

“Heartbreak and greatness stand side by side. He was willing to push and he almost had it, but he ran out of pipe.”

“Oh, Scotty, we love you no matter what. You are the man.”

With a silver and a gold, it marks Australia’s most successful day ever at a Winter Games, eclipsing the bronze and gold won by Jakara Anthony and Tess Coady in Beijing.

’Signed. Sealed. Delivered’: Guseli nails last run

Damien McCartney

VALENTINO GUSELI! YOU LEGEND.

With pressure mounting after two errors in his first two runs, Val Guseli nailed his final run.

“I feel like I’m going to pass out … I am speechless,” Torah Bright said for Nine.

“Signed. Sealed. Delivered,” Jay Carney added.

Unfortunately, it’s an 88 and he finishes in fifth position.

“He takes that in stride. Valentino, hold your head high. You’ve made the entire country incredibly proud,” Carney said.

JAMES SHOOTS INTO SECOND

Damien McCartney

SCOTTY JAMES, YOU LEGEND.

He just vaulted into second place with a stunning second run — a 93.50.

“Some runs belong on the highlight reel, some runs rewrite history,” Mitch Tomlinson said for Nine.

“Scotty James has just delivered a TKO!”

It would have been gold, if not for Yuto Totsuka’s preceding run.

“That’s a championship run,” Jay Carney said for Nine.

Guseli makes another error

Damien McCartney

Valentino Guseli has one run left to make it count — another small mistake, and he didn’t improve.

“Landed too far down in that transition and couldn’t hold on,” Torah Bright said for Nine.

Meanwhile, an 87 from Ayumu Hirano leaves the podium an all-Japan top four.

Second runs underway

Second runs have begun in this men’s halfpipe final.

There are still plenty of errors as riders chase the massive scores posted by the Japanese trio, with big tricks on display.

James bombs out on last trick!

Damien McCartney

Oof — Scotty James did the same as Guseli on his first run. On the final trick near the pipe’s end, he slipped and posted just 48.75.

“Scotty was going for broke, and he should,” Torah Bright said for Nine.

They still have two runs left.

But the three Japanese riders have already made a bold statement in those opening runs — Ryusei Yamada opened with a 92, Yuto Totsuka a 91, and Hirano’s earlier 90 means the podium is currently all-Japanese.
