Award-winning rapper Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the hit-and-run death of 20-year-old Yubin Tamang, a university student from Nepal. The incident occurred on Redbridge Lane East, Ilford, on October 18, 2025, when Clarke-Samuel's BMW M5 struck Tamang as he crossed the road, causing catastrophic injuries. CCTV footage revealed that Clarke-Samuel was driving at over 60 mph in a 30 mph zone and failed to stop at six red traffic lights, mounting the curb and colliding with a motorcyclist and a Mercedes. Tamang, who was catapulted into the air, died in hospital two days later. The court heard that Clarke-Samuel had been drinking alcohol, with his blood alcohol content exceeding the legal limit by one and a half times. He claimed he had drunk three glasses of brandy at a restaurant, but this was contradicted by the excessive speed and erratic driving observed in the CCTV footage. The defendant's previous criminal record includes 12 convictions for 27 crimes, including robbery and driving offenses. The victim's family expressed profound grief, stating that their only child's future had been stolen. The prosecution emphasized Clarke-Samuel's dangerous decision to drive after consuming alcohol, highlighting his disregard for road safety and the devastating consequences of his actions.
