A new case of measles has been detected in an adult in Adelaide, prompting health authorities to warn that the highly contagious disease is circulating undetected in the community. The individual contracted the illness locally and had not been traveling, highlighting the importance of vigilance and awareness among the public. SA Health has identified several locations the infected person visited while infectious, urging anyone who may have been exposed to be alert for symptoms and seek medical attention if necessary. These locations include a tram ride, a workplace, and a restaurant, as well as a swimming center. However, it's important to note that the locations do not pose an ongoing threat. The best way to avoid measles is vaccination, with two doses needed to provide the best protection. South Australia now funds the measles vaccine for adults born during or after 1966 who have not received two doses, and children aged six months to less than 12 months who are traveling overseas. All South Australians are encouraged to check their vaccination records and request the vaccine if there is no record of them receiving two doses. Early symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a blotchy rash which usually begins on the head and then spreads down the body. People seeking to get tested for measles need to call their doctor before any visit and tell them why they are attending, so precautions can be taken to avoid spreading the disease.
