The fate of the Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Stadium, the traditional home of the Rajasthan Royals, hangs in the balance as the IPL 2026 season approaches. A recent independent audit report commissioned by the franchise has revealed serious safety concerns, with the stadium falling short of minimum safety standards. The 700-page report highlights critical issues such as inadequate fire escape routes in VIP areas, sections of spectator stands exceeding their design life, poor earthing systems, and elevated risks of fire and electrocution. These findings have prompted the franchise to take proactive measures, with the Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC) granting permission for a comprehensive safety review. Despite concerns, the RSSC chairman, Neeraj K Pawan, has defended the stadium, asserting that the required fixes are manageable and can be completed before the IPL season begins. However, the state government has written to the BCCI, assuring top officials that spectator safety and security remain a top priority. The government has also constituted a high-level committee to thoroughly examine the stadium's safety and security, and the committee has found the stadium to be fully safe and secure, with minor improvements recommended.
