Apple's Late Decision on iPhone Fold Display: A Premium Scratch-Resistant Choice
Apple's highly anticipated iPhone Fold is reportedly set to feature a premium display film, making it more scratch-resistant than competitors' devices. This decision, coming late in the engineering process, could be a strategic move to differentiate Apple's foldable iPhone from the market.
According to The Elec report, Apple is considering two film materials for the iPhone's foldable glass. The film, which users will touch, aims to protect the underlying display. While Samsung uses PET film, Apple is leaning towards a transparent polyimide (PI) film, offering enhanced scratch resistance.
The report suggests Apple's indecisiveness, with no final choice made yet. However, a transparent PI film is the likely candidate. Initially, Apple planned to use PET, but later explored the PI option. Time is of the essence, as screen decisions are typically made in September, allowing ample time for OLED substrate fabrication.
The foldable iPhone's production timeline is unique. Typically, test production begins mid-February, followed by mass production trials in May. However, the smaller demand for the foldable iPhone might benefit Apple. Usually, Apple stocks iPhones before launch, but the high price tag of the foldable iPhone ($2,000+) suggests it won't be a bestseller.
This reduced demand could give Apple more flexibility in production timelines, allowing them to make last-minute decisions on display components without impacting the initial manufacturing run. The iPhone Fold's inner display is expected to be 7.8 inches with an invisible crease, setting it apart from the competition.
The report also mentions Chinese firm Lens Technology's role in producing the foldable glass display and bonding the chosen film. With Apple's anticipated announcement of the iPhone Fold this fall, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the final display choice is expected soon. This decision could significantly impact the iPhone Fold's scratch resistance and overall premium feel, making it a unique and desirable device in the foldable market.
