Gervonta Davis’s next opponent could be revealed soon, as the man he’s targeting has already expressed openness to a clash with the Baltimore-born knockout artist. Davis’s return date remains unclear, but momentum is building toward a likely matchup in the weeks ahead.
Davis hasn’t earned a win since June 2024, his only outing since a controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr., a result many fans felt should have cost him the WBA lightweight title and his undefeated record. Meanwhile, after Roach failed to seize Davis’s 135-pound belt, the WBA moved Davis to champion-in-recess following an arrest warrant related to domestic-violence allegations.
When Davis hinted at a comeback on social media, he suggested a rematch with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz—whom he defeated by unanimous decision in December 2021—as his immediate target.
“I’m taking him next, as soon as my knee is better.”
Cruz’s representative, Sean Gibbons, told BoxingScene that Davis sits at the top of Cruz’s wish list, calling their previous meeting “unfinished business” after their memorable four-year-old duel. He explained, “He called me and has a short hit-list of three opponents. At the very top is Gervonta Davis. It’s unfinished business for ‘Pitbull,’ and Gervonta himself has much left to prove.
“I think there’s a real chance this could come together in the near term. Cruz already beat him once; Davis is cornered, avoiding Shakur Stevenson or Lamont Roach might be risky for him. He needs an opponent who can draw big money. ‘Pitbull’ Cruz earned the right to demand that signature rematch.
“The big, big fight that captivates audiences—whether it’s Davis or Ryan Garcia—would be huge for Cruz. He’s eager to deliver something significant.”
Whether Davis returns to action soon remains uncertain, but a rematch with Cruz could be on the horizon if he does lace up the gloves again.
