The Cincinnati Reds have completed their offseason checklist with the addition of Eugenio Suárez, a designated hitter. This move comes five days after the team's 2025 season concluded in Los Angeles, with the aim of addressing key areas for improvement.
The team's president of baseball operations, Nick Krall, and general manager Brad Meador outlined three priorities: rebuilding the bullpen, enhancing defense, and bolstering the offense. With Suárez's signing, the Reds have made significant strides in these areas.
Bullpen Rebuilding
The bullpen additions include Emilio Pagán, Caleb Ferguson, Brock Burke, and Pierce Johnson, while Nick Martinez, Scott Barlow, and Brent Suter were lost as free agents. The team also added Sam Moll, Connor Phillips, and Lyon Richardson, who cleared waivers. The hard-throwing duo of Zach Maxwell and Luis Mey is returning.
Improving Defense
The team's biggest defensive addition was Ke'Bryan Hayes, a third baseman who won the National League Gold Glove. Outfield addition Dane Myers, a true center fielder, also contributes to the defensive improvement. The team is also focusing on improving the defense of Noelvi Marte and Spencer Steer.
Boosting Offense
The addition of Suárez addresses the offense's biggest need: power. His 49 home runs in 2025 surpass the combined total of the team's top two home-run hitters. Suárez's presence adds protection to the lineup, likely hitting cleanup behind Elly De La Cruz. The team also added outfielder JJ Bleday, a former top prospect, to further strengthen the offense.
